The Oil Report, August 9, 2006
Date: August 9th, 2006, Filed under Oil Report
PORTLAND, OR — by Mike Bryson — The oil industry and market has been destroyed by State regulations, control, war-mongering and subsidies. The more the State has become involved in energy regulation, the higher prices have gone and the lower supplies have dropped. Often times we see those in the State or aligned with the State seeing a crisis looming ahead, but we also have seen the State try to stop a crisis with price caps, which has caused a bigger crisis. The gas crisis during the reign of Nixon was shown to be false, just as every crisis will likely be in the future. The free market of prices tagged to real supply and demand is all we need to overcome a crisis; when real supplies dwindle and real demand goes up, other energy sources will be found. It happened with Kerosene and Coal turning into Gasoline and Nuclear energy; if it wasn’t for the State limiting the supply of Gasoline and Nuclear generation, we’d have much lower prices and much higher supplies of both. Big Box Ordinance in Chicago: what is the reason?
Date: August 9th, 2006, Filed under Anarcho-capitalism
PORTLAND, OR — by Mike Bryson — I don’t live in Chicago, but because of A.B. Dada’s previous article I was interested in watching the hilarity of a powerful City Council and a powerful Mayor battling against each other while huge corporations sit by the sidelines chuckling. The City Council of the City of Chicago passed a Big Box Ordinance a few weeks ago with a 14-1 vote. The Big Box Ordinance would force Big Box stores to pay a minimum of US$13 per hour in wages and benefits to even the most entry level employees. Immediately Target canceled 2 stores they were planning in the City, with many suburbs more than happy to let them open without the wage minimums. Mayor Daley came out immediately to fight against the ordinance, but his veto (the first in 17 years if he did so) would need 3 or 4 councilmen on his side to prevent an override. The Corporation versus the State: Go Target!
Date: August 3rd, 2006, Filed under Anarcho-capitalism
CHICAGO, IL — by A.B. Dada — The news is out all over Chicagoland — Target is pulling out of a new development in one of Chicago’s lower-income South Side neighborhoods. The City of Chicago has just passed an ordinance nicknamed the “Big Box Ordinance” which was approved 14-1 by City Council. This ordinance requires that employers pay even the least skilled worker at least US$13 in wages and benefits (about double minimum wage). This ordinance would apply to Target, Wal*Mart and any of the other “Big Box” stores that have started to open throughout the Chicago area. For years the Big Box stores could not get zoning or approval to open based on the fears of smaller business owners that the Big Box stores would run them out of business. [SLASHDOT] Life after Earth?

CHICAGO, IL — by A.B. Dada — I’ve always hated doomsday scenarios because they completely ignore what the market (that’s billions of individuals looking to better themselves regardless of what government says is good and evil) has provided us over the years. Everything that doomsdayers say is evil is part of the market giving us better lives — engines, industrialization replacing human labor, commoditization of common goods and needs, etc. Read this entire article at the anarcho-capitalism site.
Fidel Castro Quits?
Date: August 1st, 2006, Filed under Anarcho-capitalism
CHICAGO, IL — by A.B. Dada — An article at US News and World Report about the love affair between Fidel Castro and Naty Revuelta is a great read — and reminds us that everyone is just a person. There are no “madmen” who can control the world, there are no global terrorists who can be the sole fault of any attack. Every individual in power is backed by thousands, if not millions, who support them being there. This is true of terrorists and dictators in Third World countries, but it is more true of terrorists and dictators in First World countries like the U.S. and the U.K. Just because more people support a dictator does not mean that democracy is good.
